Fluorous ISEs are sensors based on Teflon(R) like materials. Although Teflon(R) itself can not be used as a sensing membrane, we like to refer to them, when asked, as Teflon(R) like sensors because most everyone is familiar with the properties of Teflon(R). The sensing membrane is non-stick and does not foul easily. In order to make sensing membranes, various components are compounded with Teflon(R).
In 2009, United Science conducted several voice of the customer interviews. One interviewee indicated that there was a need for sensors in the mining industry. United Science started sensor research in May 2009 with the goal of providing unique sensing solutions to the mining industry. As a result of this activity, United Science has licensed a sensing technology from the UMN and has gained the benefit of working with the worlds leader and inventor of fluorous sensing membranes. United Science presented its recent work on custom built xanthate sensor for the flotation industry. The work was supported in part by the National Science Foundation, FLSmidth, and Freeport McMoran. Key findings from the study showed that the sensors could measure residual unreacted xanthate in froth solutions.

Xanthate is a collector chemical widely used in the beneficiation of sulfide metals such as copper, lead, etc. We developed an electrode based on fluorous sensing membranes to measure xanthate usage in a flotation cell. Flotation is a solid-solid separations process that selectively separates the desired substance from the undesired waste material.
